February 9, 2010

Well, another cold but bright day. Last night I fell asleep really early at 9:00 and woke up at 2.00 for the day; nap time after lunch. I also woke up very cold, so I pulled back the curtain to find a thick layer of ice on the window. Victoria, out interpreter says they do not need curtains for privacy, they have a layer of ice that looks like frosted glass.

When we arrived at the baby house we were told we should not go to the play room, but stay in one of the rooms in his group, which was a little difficult because we are not allowed to put him on the floor. The baby house director was also helping to feed the babies. He seems such a sweet, gentle man who really cares for the babies. As I was feeding the baby, I kept praying, please just eat nicely, and please don’t choke on the tea. I am getting better with it. The care givers hold the empty bowl under their chins; I tried this once and almost dropped the bowl and tea!!!!! Today they said I did good. I also had to wear a head covering as well as a mask; not a pretty sight as you will see from the photos.

He really is a good eater. I think he eats as much as I would of the oatmeal; sometimes it is rice pudding. The care givers always want me to taste the food first to make sure it is not too hot. I have always gotten away without doing this until today. I wish it had been the rice pudding, but no, some kind of cereal.

The baby gets very tired very quickly; by the time we have finished eating we have about 15 mins before he wants to sleep. Today they took him from us at 11.00 because they are right there and could see he was tired; so less time for us which makes us sad. He likes to be carried, which today was good for us; he is so sweet and loves to look at himself in the mirror.

We are now back in the hotel after going to the bakery another Semey mom told us about (thanks Andrea). You are able to buy good food they sell in by 100 grams and will also warm it if you want, so we bring it back to our hotel to eat. Nobody wants us out in the cold; if the weather was warmer, it would be fun to walk around. It looks like a easy town to walk in, oh well may be when we pick him up.

This afternoon our visit was very short, we got there about 3:00 and he was really tired and because we are in the next room to where they live, the care givers saw he was tired and said he needed to go to sleep so we left at 3:30, He is so tired that trying to get him to play is almost impossible; they sleep from 11:00-1:00 eat at 2:00, so when we get there at 3:00 he is already winding down.

We really have not seen much of Semey, but may be tomorrow I will put my snow pants on and venture out to walk around the park across the street from the hotel. I will let you know if I was brave or stupid enough in our next post. Until tomorrow, Paka Paka.
