We arrived in Almaty, Kazakhstan safe. We left Orlando at 4:30 pm on Thursday and arrived in Almaty at midnight on Friday. We are at the Hotel Kazakhstan. Beautiful hotel with giant chandeliers and snow on the bushes out front. Nick and I have quickly learned how techno challenged we are. We can not send text messages or emails and finally figured out a phone call. We are leaving for the airport soon to fly to Petropovlovsk. Petro is a smaller town in the north part of the country very near the Russian border. (Siberia actually!) The flight there is almost four hours from Almaty. In Almaty we will be met by our translator and driver.
We were met at the airport last night by our attorney, Oleg. He is a great man and very interesting. He is our attorney and is also a travel agent, sells used American cars (Alex, Oleg picked us up in a four door Chevy Yukon and you would have liked the tires and wheels. He also told us the most popular car in Almaty is the Toyota Land Cruiser for $120,000), and builds American houses in Almaty. Almaty is a city of about two million people with giant snow covered mountains in the distance.
We will touch base again, technology permitting, once we are in Petro.
